Curaçao's mangroves are a calm, green counterpoint to its open beaches, and a kayak is the perfect way to explore them. The protected inlet of Spanish Water and the Rif Mangrove Park near Willemstad shelter networks of channels where red mangrove roots arch over the water and the surface stays glassy even when the trade winds blow.
Paddling these tunnels is slow and quiet by design. Guides point out the juvenile fish, crabs, and birds that the roots protect, and explain how these forests act as nurseries for the reef and as natural storm buffers for the coast. Because the water is flat and the routes are sheltered, it suits beginners and families as readily as keen paddlers.
Morning trips are coolest and the water is usually calmest before midday. Wear sun protection you can paddle in, bring water, and the launch areas around Jan Thiel and Spanish Water make this an easy half-day from the southeast coast.
