Moderate. Fighting a big fish takes strength and stamina, and the open water can be rough. Not ideal for those with severe motion sickness or back problems.
Curaçao's leeward coast shelves off into deep water remarkably close to land, which makes it a strong base for deep-sea fishing. A charter clears the shallows within minutes and is soon trolling the blue water where the island's big-game species feed, so you spend more of the trip with lines out and less of it travelling.
The usual targets are mahi-mahi (dorado), wahoo, and tuna, with sailfish, marlin, and barracuda possible depending on the season and conditions. Charters supply the rods, reels, tackle, and bait, and the crew handles the technical work, so the trip suits both seasoned anglers and complete first-timers. Trips run as half or full days, with the longer option reaching the most productive grounds.
Boats depart from marinas near Spanish Water and Willemstad. Take motion-sickness tablets in advance if you are prone to seasickness, bring sun protection and a hat, and book the boat as a private or shared charter to suit your group.
